  • Top Urban Haven: Old Northeast, St. Petersburg, Florida – Old Northeast tops the list as the most coveted urban haven; this area blends historic allure and modern urban convenience.
  • Nature and Tranquility Appeal – Tranquil surroundings and natural landscapes are the most appealing aspects of country living for urban dwellers, with 29% of respondents prioritizing this.
  • Outdoor Spaces Vital for Urbanites – A significant 71% of participants emphasize the importance of having access to outdoor spaces, underscoring the need for green areas within urban environments.
  • Urban-Rural Blend Desired – The desire for a city neighborhood with a distinct small-town or country feel is the most popular living environment preference, indicating a longing for the best of both urban and rural worlds.

  • Interest in Backyard Chickens – 20% of respondents expressed interest in keeping backyard chickens, if neighborhood regulations permit, reflecting a growing enthusiasm for self-sufficiency and a closer connection to food sources.

Implications of the Study:

  • Urban-Rural Dynamic Evolves – The findings reveal a complex urban-rural dynamic whereby city residents increasingly seek the tranquility, community, and closeness to nature typically associated with rural areas, without abandoning the conveniences and opportunities of urban living. This underscores a societal shift towards valuing a more balanced lifestyle.
  • Green Urban Planning Essential – The high priority placed on access to green spaces within urban settings suggests an urgent need for city planners and policymakers to integrate more nature and outdoor recreational opportunities into densely populated areas. This is critical for the well-being and satisfaction of urban populations.
  • Shift Towards Sustainability – The strong preference for locally sourced and organic produce reflects a broader societal movement towards sustainability and health consciousness. It indicates a growing market demand for local farmers’ markets and urban agriculture initiatives, potentially driving changes in urban food supply chains.
  • Rise of Urban Agriculture – The interest in small-scale, at-home food production (e.g., backyard chickens) highlights an increasing desire for self-sufficiency and a deeper connection to the sources of food. This could influence urban policy regarding residential zoning and animal husbandry regulations.
  • Redefining Urban Lifestyles – Overall, these findings point to a redefined urban lifestyle that incorporates elements traditionally associated with rural living, suggesting a transformative impact on urban development strategies, housing market trends, and community planning efforts aimed at fostering environments that cater to these evolving preferences.

Methodology

Online panel survey of 3,000 adults based on age, gender, and geography. Internal data sources are used to obtain population data sets. We used a two-step process to ensure representativeness through stratified sampling and post-stratification weighting.

Respondents are carefully chosen from a geographically representative online panel of double opt-in members. This selection is further tailored to meet the precise criteria required for each unique survey. Throughout the survey, we design questions to carefully screen and authenticate respondents, guaranteeing the alignment of the survey with the ideal participants.

To ensure the integrity of our data collection, we employ an array of data quality methods. Alongside conventional measures like digital fingerprinting, bot checks, geo-verification, and speeding detection, etc. each response undergoes a thorough review by a dedicated team member to ensure quality and contextual accuracy. Our commitment extends to open-ended responses, subjecting them to scrutiny for gibberish answers and plagiarism detection.
